Can any actor play any role?

TV and movie roles nowadays play quickly and furiously with characters' identities. 007 is now a black woman (she isn't James Bond, but she has assumed his codename). Ghostbusters 2016 entirely replaced the main characters with women. In the television series 'Elementary', Sherlock Holmes' friend and sidekick, Dr Watson, is a Chinese woman, and the gender-swapping famously continues with the 13th doctor in the BBC series Dr Who.

In this week's episode, Tayo argues that all this identity swapping is woke virtue-signalling, and has the net effect of eroding - if not completely destroying - our cultural heritage. Tony disagrees and feels that anyone should be able to play any role. "Well," asks Tayo. "does that mean Brad Pitt can play Nelson Mandela?"
