Episode 165: Business Driven PMO Setup; Chapter 13 - PMO Passion: Where does it come from?

Published: July 9, 2009, 11 a.m.

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story introduces, “Business Driven PMO Setup; Chapter 13 - PMO Passion: Where does it come from?” presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. Each chapter of the book starts off with a cartoon and the cartoon in Chapter 13 goes like this. There is a picture of a PMO manager talking to two of the project managers. The PMO manager says, “Guys, we just landed our largest customer contract ever. It is big, really big. Which one of you wants to manage the project?” One of the project managers eagerly jumps in and answers, “I do, I really do, please. I have been waiting and preparing for a project like this for years!” The other project manager simply offers a “Phew.” The cartoon shown in figure 13.1 brings to mind the famous expression and its many incantations, “one man’s pain is another man’s pleasure.” It is not so much the concept of Schadenfreude or Roman holiday in which delight is derived from the suffering of others that is intriguing, rather the simple premise that two people of relatively similar backgrounds in terms of education, job position, and skills can view the same task as enjoyable or a chore. And in the context of today’s businesses, the passion for the PMO is a stand out example of one of those things that varies greatly from one business professional to the next. What makes us passionate about what we do and to what degree is passion an acceptable emotion to display in the workplace?

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo suggests, “Treat people well all the time." To be an effective manager, servant-leader, and member of the leadership team, you must treat people well all the time, not just when it is easy and when you have the time to do so. Remembering to say thank you and please as part of your regular vocabulary is not just good etiquette, it is good business. And to not do so is just poor form. Building relationships with people will help them want to be part of your team and soon your team becomes their team.
