This week as Iowa voters took to the caucuses, Brookings hosted a panel discussion on defense strategy for the next president. The panel, moderated by\xa0Brookings Senior Fellow Michael O\u2019Hanlon, included\xa0Robert Kagan of the Brookings Institution,\xa0Mackenzie Eaglen of the American Enterprise Institute, and former Department of Defense Undersecretary for Policy James Miller, all making the case for U.S. leadership in world affairs. During their conversation, they\xa0explored the security challenges facing the next president, including two wars, a rising China,\xa0a resurgent Russia, and a metastasizing ISIS,\xa0all topped off by\xa0a contracting defense budget,\xa0and examined whether and in what ways those challenges will cause the next president to alter U.S. strategy overseas.
