Florida hit a record new high of 15,300 new cases in a single day -- more than New York City at its peak back in April. Yet Florida's Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has demanded that all schools in Florida must reopen for in-person classes, five days a week, overriding the concerns of local school officials. California is seeing surging cases, as well -- on Monday, the state's Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered bars, indoor restaurant dining, salons, churches and gyms to shut down again, and for the biggest counties, the school year will start with remote learning and not in-person classes. Donald Trump's Sec.\xa0 of Education, billionaire Betsy DeVos, announced on the Sunday news shows that all schools must reopen -- forcing teachers and staff to risk exposure -- or face losing federal funding, yet she admitted the administration has no federal guidance for schools when COVID spikes occur.\xa0 The Trump Administration's own coronavirus testing coordinator warned that the U.S. shouldn't even be thinking about getting kids back into the classroom until the virus is under control. But getting control of the virus will be difficult, with multiple states again reporting shortages because the Trump Administration has failed to ramp up US manufacturing of testing kits and personal protective equipment.
