The Russian military destroyed an historic theatre in Mariupol where hundreds of people, including children, were sheltering, and have trapped the city in a full-blown humanitarian crisis by cutting off access to food, water, electricity and medicine. New reports suggest some potential progress in negotiations for a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia, but many questions remain. Ukraine's courageous President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a virtual address to the U.S. Congress, invoking Pearl Harbor, 9/11 and the nation's founding fathers as he asked for additional support from U.S. lawmakers, called for an escalation of economic sanctions against Russian lawmakers, and asked President Biden to help lead the world toward peace. President Biden announced a new round of military and humanitarian aid for Ukraine, and later in the day, labeled Putin a 'war criminal.' The U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates by a quarter of a percent, hoping to ease inflation by forcing the economy into a recession. Biden's nominee to a top spot at the Fed, Sarah Bloom Raskin, was forced to withdraw due to obstruction by Senate Republicans and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), fueled by the fossil fuel industry. The deeply divided Senate managed to pass a bipartisan measure to make Daylight Saving Time permanent in 2023.
