Lake Ontario Commercial Fishers Joanne and Kendle Dewey

Published: Jan. 24, 2023, 12:16 p.m.

Joanne and Kendle Dewey fish commercially on Lake Ontario and the Bay of Quinte using hoops and traps. It’s a family profession that dates back four generations. The two chose to fish commercially even though both trained and worked as biologists, park interpreters at Sand Banks Provincial Park in the case of Joanne, and fisheries research in the case of Kendle. Despite all the challenges and risks associated with commercial fishing, it’s what they love. Joanne and Kendle speak with host Lawrence Gunther about the business, the challenges of fishing commercially on a lake that is changing continuously, and their hopes and concerns for the future of Lake Ontario and the Bay of Quinte’s commercial fishery on The Blue fish Radio Show.
