Should truck drivers pick up hitch hikers? Is it worth it and can you be fired for it? Truckers normally have a big heart and when they see someone walking we might have a tendency to want to offer a ride. Especially when weather is not so good, we want to help even more. But does your company have a policy of "no hitchhikers"? Or does your company simply say that every rider must have a authorization pass? Most carrier have these rules for many reasons. For one, when we pick up a total stranger we do not know what to expect and when a carrier is the owner of that rig, they normally don't want someone that could be trouble getting in their trucks. Insurance is another factor. When trucking companies sign for policies they are normally under strict instructions and they do not want someone breaking those rules and thus potentially causing a claim to be denied because of rules. Many truckers have been robbed, hurt or even killed by hitchhikers. Imagine yourself pulling over to pick up what seems to be an attractive female needing a lift. But suddenly someone like her boyfriend jumps out from behind something and has a gun pointed at your head. Now you're in more trouble than you ever thought you would be in. Its just that simple and quick that your world can be spun upside down. So our advice is follow the rules as best you can with your company.
