This is our full conversation with the effervescent Tanuja Gomes, Co-founder of Furtados School of Music (FSM). Once an astute banking professional with nearly two decades of working with several Multinational banks, Tanuja began FSM in 2011 with a vision to make quality music education accessible to people across age groups while making the entire learning process fun-filled and joyous. Now of course, Furtados is synonymous with western classical music in India and is inarguably the leaders in supplying of musical instruments across the country. Under the leadership of Tanuja and her business partner Dharini Upadhyaya, FSM grew from strength to strength and is acknowledged for the music curriculum it provides to top-notch K-12 schools and some colleges across the country. It also has programmes for corporates and has worked in the past with corporates such as Tata Consultancy Services to provide instrumental training to its professionals in-house. Tanuja shares with us her vision of imparting the best music curriculum across the country, how it is never late to begin to learn music through an instrument or vocal-training, how a fun, learner-centric curriculum can help bolster that creativity, why there should be no excuses in following that passion and how setting objectives to achieve a level of proficiency is the key to master an instrument as long as you are committed to it. The beauty of learning an instrument is the very personal relationship one fosters with it which is what makes it so unique. It was Igor Stravinksy one of the most influential composers of the 20th century who said – I haven’t understood a bar of music in my life but I have felt it! Itching to befriend an instrument already? Now is the time! Let’s hit it!
