I began writing fiction in 2009, at the age of 47, after artists Iain McCaig and Dermot Power dared me to write a screenplay. I wrote two, and then tried my hand at short stories, the second of which sold to Asimov\\u2019s Science Fiction. After that, I was hooked.
My story \\u201cThe Telling\\u201d, originally published by Beneath Ceaseless Skies, won the 2013 World Fantasy Award for Short Fiction. \\xa0And my story \\u201cBloom\\u201d from the December 2013 issue of Asimov\\u2019s was a finalist for the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award.
My day job is in filmmaking; currently I wrangle spaceships and superheroes at the legendary Industrial Light & Magic in San Francisco. My film projects include Beowulf, Tim Burton\\u2019s Alice in Wonderland, Lucy, and the upcoming Tomorrowland and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
