This section was really interesting because it does something we haven't seen in a while, which is look way back to the start of Mapidere's rule and how it affected someone from a very low class in society. We haven't been back at the origin of this story in a long time, and it's no less horrible than I remember.
Mimi is clearly an unusual kid and she had some kind of connection to the gods that nobody else in her neighborhood seems to have, and the injury she sustained from the lightning strike feels like something that will wind up being very significant.
