I'm really not sure what to make of these chapters, because it's a lot of Mal feeling sorry for himself and getting drunk, putting himself in harms way, and generally shirking his duty. Alina is also kind of in a similar place, wandering out into the town amongst the devotees who think she's a saint, almost letting herself get torn apart.
However, I'm at least glad to see a flicker of interest coming from Alina regarding Nikolai as a romantic partner, because honestly I think they're way more suited and while I don't think they will ultimately wind up together, i need her to at least see what's right in front of her face.
