Jelene Wilkinson joins me today to Speak LOUD and share her story of sexual abuse and emotional trauma. We discuss how to forgive yourself, find your voice, and recognize your strength despite your abuse.
Jelene describes her upbringing in the Mormon Church that shaped her perception of the world. She explains that she grew up in a loving household and her parents spoke with her about sexual abuse and encouraged her to speak out if she was ever uncomfortable or abused.
As Jelene got older, she was seen as a goody-two-shoes, but that image was shattered after she was raped. Because of her abuse, she no longer saw herself as worthy and became the risky, promiscuous girl that everyone perceived her to be. This led to more sexual assault and the belief that she was nothing more than a sex object.
Jelene shares how her life progressed and how she found herself in a toxic marriage. After trying to keep up the façade of a perfect life with a happy marriage, Jelene realized that she was being emotionally abused.
From her sexual assault and emotional abuse, came wounds that weighed down Jelene. The trauma that she faced has made it difficult for her to be vulnerable with other people.
Jelene has found her strength in learning to love herself, trusting that everything happens for a reason. She speaks into how her assault and abuse led her to solidify who she is, practice patience, and see the greatness within herself. Jelene now embraces her gifts and celebrates her true self!
Jelene describes how she overcame her belief that what she’d experienced was not abuse because she compared her experiences to other stories of abuse she’d heard. Once she recognized her abuse, she was empowered to share her story, as well as use her message and her amazing gifts to help other victims of trauma.
