There is often a stigma that abuse only happens to women. Today, on the Speak LOUD podcast, I welcome Daryl Shaun Price who shares his story of emotional abuse and his journey of conquering emotional trauma.
Daryl Shaun explains that, after growing up in the Church of Jesus Christ the Latter-Day Saints, he was married because he saw it as the next step that a person was supposed to take in life. He admits that he never truly felt ready to be married or wanted to do so but felt pressured to do so by the church. Soon after being married, Daryl Shaun’s wife became emotionally abusive towards him.
Daryl Shaun speaks of how the environment that his ex-wife came from cultivated negativity, which is where her abusive nature stemmed from. He describes how he coped with his emotional trauma throughout his childhood and marriage and how it affected, not only him directly, but his children indirectly. After confronting his abuser, Daryl Shaun shares, he felt immediate relief and gained peace from breaking free from his abusive situation.
What is so powerful about Daryl Shaun’s story is his ability to reflect on his emotional abuse and recognize that his ex-wife’s emotional abuse was a direct result of her upbringing and hurt. He acknowledges that he is not alone and so many men continue to face the emotional trauma that he was able to overcome. Daryl Shaun also speaks into the challenges he’s had with projecting his emotional trauma onto other relationships and how he’s shifted his mindset so that the emotional abuse he endured does not impact his current and future relationships.
Through his emotional abuse, Daryl Shaun has gained incredible strength and has become empowered to find himself. He shares what his healing looked like and how he rose out of his trauma to find his voice, find his confidence, and find his peace. Daryl Shaun explains that the key to conquering emotional trauma and achieving resilience is loving yourself.
Emotional abuse is a scar that never truly disappears. However, Daryl Shaun explains why THAT IS OKAY and how embracing the past, however difficult, makes us who we are. He reminds us that trauma will affect us, but we have the power to make that affect positive.
