Psychedelic Dance Music by Electro-Cumbia Bomba Estéreo (From the Archives)

Published: Sept. 7, 2020, 4 p.m.

Based in Bogota, Columbia, the band Bomba Estéreo continues to explore their South American roots, mixing up cumbia, vallenato, and champeta with reggaeton, hiphop, dubstep and Euro electronica. On their record, Ayo, they anchor melody lines with traditional woodwind instruments like flauto de millo or gaita played by folkloric musicians; bassist and synth master Simón Mejía augments them and marries them to electronica. The band gaily trips through a garden of pop delights, dropping beats irresistible to most folks on the dance-floor. Over this brilliant sonic palette, vocalist Liliana Saumet deftly takes her instrument through long legato lines, crisp verses, and tweaked-out auto-tuned effects. Bomba Estéreo hopes to make you dance, when they play live in the studio. (From 2017.)
