One of the most common questions that comes up with my clients is: Is social media ok to do with this mindfulness work.

And often, especially with my clients who are parents, this is followed by a desperate plea: Please don’t take away my social media!!! It’s my only break!!!

Well, the good news is that yes, social media can be done in alignment with mindfulness practices; and no, I’m not going to ask you to give up your social media breaks.

What I will invite you to do, is to be intentional about your social media activity.

And you can even use your social media as a mindfulness practice! Here’s how:

First, set these intentions:

- This is an appropriate time for me to be on social media.

- I’m going to be on for ‘X’ minutes.

- This is why I’m going on (what I’m planning to do)

Now, set a timer for three minutes or less (even if you plan to be on for 20 minutes).

When the timer sounds, pause for a minute and check to see if you’re meeting the intentions you set.

And then check in with how your body is feeling.

Do you feel tension, anxiety, stress, depression?

Or do you feel joy, happiness, inspiration, or relaxation?

Now, use the answers to these questions to alter your social media activity so it serves you.
