“Live out your imagination instead of your memories”

This was a social media post I came upon yesterday and it really caught my attention.

I paused and sat with it for a few moments.

What it is really saying is: live out your POTENTIAL instead of your LIMITATIONS.

And this is profound advice!

The trouble is that, given the way our minds’ programming works, our memories define for us the potential of our future.

And because we’ve all lived this way for so long, it might take more than a clever Facebook post to break free from this cycle.

Mindfulness practices - grounding ourselves in the present moment in non-judging awareness - will help us to see the impact of living in our memory.

But we can complement this in a very powerful way with a practice of self discovery: journaling.

When we take just a few minutes a day to write out how we perceive our emotional and mental experiences, we uncover the patterns created by our implicit memories and traumas and we come to understand how these patterns limit our potential.

I have been journaling in a very specific way (including using specific prompts) for over three years now and it has worked wonders for me!

Have you ever done any journaling?
