When I teach mindful parenting, the focus is not so much on seeking the \u2018right\u2019 techniques of parenting, but more on becoming present and attuned to your kids.
\n
\nWe place the emphasis on the long term development of the child and the long term relationship between parent and child, rather than the short term behavior of the child.
\n
\nNot only is this approach widely supported by research in psychology and neurobiology, but it also falls in line with the natural dynamic of growth and personality development.
\n
\nOne reason many parenting books go from promising self help books to frustrating SHELF help books is that no book can address the complexity and individuality that make up our children.
\n
\nAll kids are different. And no one technique is likely to work for them all - even for two kids in the same family. Am I right?
\n
\nBut when we work on the ability of the parent to be present and attuned with their kids, we give the parents a skill set to connect with their children on the deeper emotional level.
\n
\nOnce we do this, the behavior mostly takes care of itself.
