In this episode, I walk you through all aspects of technical SEO. Many people think they can write content, target keywords, and obtain backlinks, but that is not the case. Technical SEO provides a foundation for growth on your website.

But first, technical SEO is the practice of implementing proper website techniques to provide a foundation for your website. It includes sitemaps, eliminating 300, 400, and 500 errors on your website.

Now enough chatter here is 5 common mistakes I see when I audit for technical SEO.

#1 Sitemap errors are dreadful. Websites use a sitemap to tell Google what to specifically crawl on a website. If you have technical errors on your website there is no chance, Google will see your sitemap as authoritative. First things first, please make sure non of these errors on your sitemap right now.

#2 404 Errors are webpages that are not found on your website. There are three core ways 404 errors happen on websites. You delete a page and do nothing with the URL, move a URL to a new one, or forget to redirect URLs.

The way you can fix this is by using a technical SEO tool like screaming frog. Go to c-pannel or wherever you write your redirects and fix them.

#3 Redirect strategy sucks. Only use 301 redirects. 302’s show you’re not confident in what you’re doing as a website owner. Now this might be controversial to other SEOs and web developer/ Don

#4 Website migration strategy sucks. Too often I see websites not plan adequately enough for website risks. They have no back-ups in place, they don’t manage the robots.txt file, and they do not implement redirects properly. The worst is they do not check for broken backlinks.

#5 Implementation of HTTP is crucial. When you flip the switch from HTTP to https there are a lot of technical SEO errors that occur. The first thing to think about it internal links and backlinks. Yes, if you have 10,000 internal links to HTTP you must invest time to change them.

Bonus:

The bonus tip is redirect chains. A redirect chain is a webpage directing to a webpage, directing to another webpage. There are three pages all pointing to a final destination. A LAZY website practice. You can fix this by eliminating the first redirect and pointing it to the final destination.
