This is the first story in the first book of the Panchatantra, called simply "The Loss of Friends". The plot of the book is revealed in the opening line:

"The forest lion and the bull

Were linked in friendship, growing, full:

\\n

A jackal then estranged the friends

\\n

For Greedy and malicious ends"

\\nThere is a bull that belongs to a merchant named Increase. As he thinks that his bull has died, he leaves him by the riverside. The bull\'s roar scares a local lion named Rusty. Sensing fear in the leader, Cheek and Victor, a couple of jackals, plot to make gains for themselves.
