An interview with pianist Wei Luo
Award-winning pianist Wei Luo has a self-titled debut album out on Decca Gold.
Her passion is Russian music from the classical era.
\u201cEver since I was very young, my mother took me to Russian ballet, such as Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty,\u201d Luo told Rio Grande Guardian presenter Mario Munoz.
\u201cI was really fascinated by the beautiful melodies and the stage setting and the stories. I think that is where everything started.\u201d
Wei began piano lessons when she was four years old. A year later, she gave her debut recital in Hong Kong and international acclaim soon followed.\xa0
At ten years old, Wei made her orchestral debut with the Shanghai Philharmonic and later opened its 2011 season with a performance of the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 3, a work she still champions today.\xa0
Another early milestone was being accepted to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where she continues to study while preparing for her major label debut at the age of 20.\xa0
Luo received the 2018 Gilmore Young Artist Award and was named one of WQXR's "19 for \u201819" artists to watch for her "pyrotechnical virtuosity."\xa0
