A conversation about the creation of this Poe-inspired cantata, DARK BELLS. Mark Redfield hosts a candid interview with composer Jonathan Leshnoff and musician Peter Minkler, in which they discuss the creation and inspiration of “Dark Bells”, inspired by the poems “The Bells”, “Alone” and “Eldorado” by Edgar Allan Poe. Although the piece is designed for orchestra as well as chorus, this interview includes excerpts of “Dark Bells” performed by The Baltimore Choral Arts Society. “Dark Bells” is an oratorio composed for solo viola, orchestra and chorus by Jonathan Leshnoff in 2014. It was co-commissioned by Peter Minkler and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra. We are grateful to The Baltimore Choral Arts Society for allowing us to listen and record one of their rehearsals for “Dark Bells”, under the direction of associate conductor Leo Wanenchak.
