Hands-On Leadership Strategies from a 24-Year Military Veteran | Douglas Ward

Published: Jan. 30, 2020, 9 a.m.

It is never a mistake to start developing your leadership qualities as early as now. If you want to grow, by any measure, you’ll need to step up as a leader at some point.

Today’s episode is all about leadership and who better to discuss it with than a retired military veteran with 24 years of distinguished service, Douglas Ward. During his time, he held numerous leadership roles to include instructor and manager of over 500 personnel. Additionally, Douglas was the Troop Chief for a hand-selected group of special communicators who supported and deployed into austere environments with Special Operations Forces.

Upon retirement, he supported government agencies as a subject matter expert in non-standard communications and as a business development executive. These experiences have enabled him to pass on the knowledge and lessons of leadership under extreme conditions for companies needing management team building.

“Your job is to stand up for your people. Back them up. Empower them to do their job.” This is just one of the many powerful messages Douglas has shared with us through this episode. Are you an aspiring leader? If so, then you don’t want to miss this episode!

Quotes:

“Body language and eye contact, those types of things are going to tell a different story than what you are being told.”

“Look at your workplace as if it is a bookshelf. Every book on there is one of the team members. Every one of those books, you should have a better understanding, at least a little bit of a summary.”

“If you don’t train them (employees) and invest in them, they’re gonna leave anyway.”

“Your (company) vision should be not more than two sentences.”

“Simplification is always more effective over the long term than complication.”

“Be open.  Be transparent. They are going to value that more than if you try to hide something on why you did something a certain way.”

“People will hold their ideas if they feel that you are not gonna take their communications and take them seriously.”

“There’s a lot of people out there who would take a job for $10,000-$15,000 less if they know they are at a place that’s making a difference and they are making a difference than going to a place and having to live in a toxic environment.”

“If you want to be a good leader, you also have to be effective.”
