Steven C. Hayes is one of the godfathers of modern American psychology - and Nevada Foundation Professor in the Behavior Analysis program at the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada. An author of 44 books and nearly 600 scientific articles, his career has focused on an analysis of the nature of human language and cognition and the application of this to the understanding and alleviation of human suffering. He is the developer of Relational Frame Theory, an account of human higher cognition, and has guided its extension to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a popular evidence-based form of psychotherapy that uses mindfulness, acceptance, and values-based methods.

Chords/lyrics to the song:

\\n

VERSE
\\nF
\\nMost of us live in a state of constant confusion
\\nF
\\nAs automatic thoughts cause circuitous delusions
\\nBf
\\nWe don\'t want these feelings
\\nF
\\nSo choose distractions

\\n

But with simple exercises, your mind can be taught
\\nTo watch the act of thinking without entangling in thoughts
\\nWelcome emotions
\\nHold them to the light

\\n

Bf                               C
\\nDefuse your thoughts, choose how to react
\\nDefuse your thoughts, choose how to react

\\n

VERSE
\\nFor a minute let your mind go wherever it wants
\\nThen write down the thoughts you had, every little point
\\nWhen you\'ve let the fish run
\\nReel him in

\\n

Now disobey on purpose the dictator within
\\nWrite down the phrase "I cannot walk around this room"
\\nThen read it outloud
\\nWhile you walk around

\\n

Or give your mind a name, and listen to it speak
\\nPolitely as you would to any stranger you meet
\\nAnd agree or disagree
\\nRespectfully

\\n

Defuse your thoughts, choose how to react
\\nDefuse your thoughts, choose how to react

\\n

MIDDLE (whispering and downbeat)
\\nBf
\\nFor sticky thoughts
\\nC
\\nSing them away
\\nDm
\\nTo the tune of
\\nF
\\nHappy Birthday

\\n

Or write them down
\\nAnd carry them with you
\\nWherever you go
\\nThrough your day

\\n

Bf
\\nAccept every memory, every faction
\\nC
\\nOverride rigid reactions

\\n

WHISTLING VERSE

\\n

VERSE
\\nSo you\'ve noticed now that there\'s more than one voice
\\nAn argument begins whenever you\'re faced with a choice
\\nDoes this to-and-fro
\\nFeel familiar?

\\n

Write down what the voices are repeating at you
\\nDon\'t think which are appropriate or even true
\\nSee them as quarrelling children
\\nWatch in amusement

\\n

Now your mind\'s a bus, thoughts are passengers
\\nBut they\'re distracting your driving and causing a fuss
\\nKeep your destination sign
\\nAlways in mind

\\n

Defuse your thoughts, choose how to react
\\nDefuse your thoughts, choose how to react
\\nDefuse your thoughts, choose how to react
