Planned Solutions Leading Economic Indicators Show Mixed Results
In this episode of the Planned Solutions Incorporated Podcast, The pace of the US economic recovery has been in question ever since the CARES Act stimulus ended. This has caused many economists to watch August’s leading economic indicators closely for any signs that the rate of growth may be slowing. The first data available is the Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) which shows mixed results. The indexes show continued growth in August but the pace of improvement slowed in many areas. Also, Transportation data is often used as a leading economic indicator for manufacturing and retail sales data. Recently, transportation data has shown a strong recovery in freight volumes and the prices charged to transport goods from place to place. This may be an early sign that the US economy will continue to recover in the Fall as it heals from the economic damage from the Coronavirus. And, Unemployment benefits were expanded for many beneficiaries as a part of the Coronavirus stimulus bill passed in March. In addition, some states have continued to pay increased benefits in response to an executive order signed after the increased CARES act benefits expired. Beneficiaries of these payments need to understand that they are taxable for federal tax purposes so they will be added to their taxable income and could result in tax owed on their 2020 federal tax return.
