Drug names are not normal words.\\xa0 They aren\\u2019t always pronounced the way they look, and sounding them out doesn\\u2019t always work.\\xa0 The two resources I use most often are the USP Dictionary Online (USAN) and the FDA\\u2019s website. \\xa0

Whether you\\u2019re a student delivering a presentation, a pharmacist doing some CE and curious how to pronounce a new drug name, a pharmacy technician who has to pronounce a drug name at patient pick-up counter, or a voice actor prepping a script, do your research, and use reliable sources for pronouncing drug names.\\xa0 Pronouncing drug names correctly will help you feel confident, avoid criticism, earn trust, improve safety, and feel less frustrated. \\xa0

Researching pronunciations on the internet can be time-consuming and lead to the wrong answer.\\xa0 If you get a pronunciation from more than one source, and 2 or more don\\u2019t match, you will end up guessing.\\xa0 Evaluate your sources carefully.\\xa0 What you find might be crowd-sourced, computer-generated, someone\\u2019s best guess, or the real deal. \\xa0

I strongly recommend the USP Dictionary Online for generic drug name pronunciations. \\xa0

Brand names are typically shorter and easier to pronounce.\\xa0 Unfortunately, there is no dictionary for pronouncing them.\\xa0 Brand name drug pronunciations are NOT in the USP Dictionary.\\xa0 Resources I recommend for brand-name drug pronunciations are:

1. Medication guides (FDA Medication Guides Search page)
2. Package inserts (Drugs@FDA Search page)
3. The drug\\u2019s website
4. A drug rep for the product\\xa0
5. An experienced pharmacology professor or an experienced healthcare professional, like a pharmacist.\\xa0 If it\\u2019s an older drug, speak to someone with 20+ years clinical experience. \\xa0
6. Contact the drug sponsor\\u2019s Drug Information Department. \\xa0

Levomilnacipran is generic for Fetzima. \\xa0

LEE voe mil NA si pran is generic for Fetzima. \\xa0

See how it\\u2019s broken down into the syllables, and the syllables that are emphasized are capitalized?\\xa0 \\u201cNA\\u201d has the primary emphasis.\\xa0 \\u201cLEE\\u201d has the secondary emphasis.\\xa0 Emphasize \\u201cNA\\u201d more than \\u201cLEE.\\u201d

Mirena (Mur AY nah, with a long \\u201ca\\u201d) is a levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system.

Learn the intended pronunciations from the source who named the drugs instead of making a guess and passing it around like the \\u201ctelephone game.\\u201d\\xa0 Drug names are weird for a reason (SAFETY).\\xa0 Let\\u2019s use them the way they were intended to be pronounced!\\xa0 There\\u2019s a difference between wanting to BE right because you like how someone says a drug name on YouTube and wanting to GET IT RIGHT by using the correct pronunciation.\\xa0 Let\\u2019s GET IT RIGHT! \\xa0
