“Every stone, every little perfection, or dilapidation, the most minute detail, which, on an ordinary drawing would merit no special attention becomes, on a photograph, worthy of careful study’’ - Francis Firth

Welcome to the Outerfocus Podcast!

This week we welcome photographer Niki Boon, from New Zealand. Niki is known for her beautiful body of work which mainly focuses on her children. We get to know a little about how Niki first got started in photography going right back to time she spent in Scotland developing film for other people to subsequently shooting the adventures of her family in New Zealand. We also hear a little about what has inspired her in times it’s been needed; her approach to photography; and what she was doing in Japan recently.

Looking back at the history of photography we delve into the life and works of an English photographer named Francis Frith. Known for his work in the Middle East, he later opened Francis & Hayward, a studio in Liverpool which gained great success leading to the hiring of more photographers as his postcard company thrived, some of which are still being reproduced today. We also touch on the equipment he used, the process he followed and a small insight into his personal life.
