The\xa0chital\xa0(/t\u0283i\u02d0t\u0259l/;\xa0Axis axis), also known as\xa0spotted deer,\xa0chital deer, and\xa0axis deer, is a\xa0species\xa0of\xa0deer\xa0that is native to the\xa0Indian subcontinent. It was first described by German naturalist\xa0Johann Christian Polycarp Erxleben\xa0in 1777. A moderate-sized deer, male chital reach nearly 90\xa0cm (35\xa0in) and females 70\xa0cm (28\xa0in) at the shoulder. While males weigh 30\u201375\xa0kg (66\u2013165\xa0lb), the lighter females weigh 25\u201345\xa0kg (55\u201399\xa0lb). It is\xa0sexually dimorphic; males are larger than females, and\xa0antlers\xa0are present only on males. The upper parts are golden to rufous, completely covered in white spots. The abdomen,\xa0rump, throat, insides of legs, ears, and tail are all white. The antlers, three-pronged, are nearly 1\xa0m (3.3\xa0ft) long.
