Long before I started doing this for a living, I had the notion that I was going to be a record producer\u2026after all, I loved music and the idea of being able to help record it would be a great job\u2026\n\nSo as high school wound down, I started to look around for schools that taught music production\u2026and that\u2019s when reality set it\u2026all of them asked for a portfolio of past work\u2026I was 18 years old and from a small prairie town\u2026how was I supposed to have a portfolio of past work?...\n\nThey also made it clear that I had to be musically adept\u2026I was a pretty good drummer, but that wasn\u2019t enough\u2026and I had seven years of accordion lessons, but that didn\u2019t really cut it\u2026I couldn\u2019t play guitar or any other type of keyboard\u2026\n\nLong story short, I gave up on that dream after a few rejection letters and here we are\u2026but I\u2019m still fascinated by the talent and equipment that goes into making records\u2014which is why anytime I get a chance to talk to anyone who does that, I\u2019m in\u2026\n\nDavid Botrill is one of those guys\u2026he\u2019s a Canadian record producer who has worked with took, muse, peter Gabriel, the smashing pumpkins, rush, and a ton of others\u2026he\u2019s got three Grammy\u2019s and has worked in some of the most famous recording studios from here to the UK.\n\nAnd I\u2019ve got a chance to talk to him about being a record producer?...let\u2019s go\u2026\nLearn more about your ad choices.
