b'We begin this episode with Ecclesiastes, chapter 3, verses 1-3\\u2026ish:\\n\\n\\u201cto everything there is a season, a time to every purpose under the heaven\\u2026a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted\\u2026a time to rock, a time to dance, a time to head bang, and time to chill\\u201d...\\n\\nOkay, I don\\u2019t think that last part is in any edition of the standard bible\\u2026I might have made it up\\u2026\\n\\nHere\\u2019s what I\\u2019m trying to say\\u2026the universe moves in cycles\\u2026things are born, build up, peak, and fade away\\u2026but they don\\u2019t necessarily die\\u2026they just go into some kind of stasis, a type of hibernation before something triggers a rebirth\\u2026and if the conditions are right, the whole process repeats again\\u2026\\n\\nThis happens with music a lot\\u2026certain genres, certain scenes, have periodic revivals\\u2026\\n\\nLemme give you an example\\u2026in the late 50s, all the cool kids were into folk music\\u2026stuff that was a generation old suddenly became the thing all the hipsters were listening to\\u2026the Kingston trio\\u2026Peter, Paul, and Mary\\u2026\\n\\nThis translated into a big boom for modern folk music that eventually manifested in Bob Dylan and everyone who followed him\\u2026\\n\\nAround the same time in the UK, the big thing was known as \\u201ctrad jazz\\u201d\\u2026English hipsters who were unimpressed with this new rock\\u2019n\\u2019roll thing, decided that traditional jazz that was originally big 60 years previous was where it was at\\u2026\\n\\nAgain, there was a revival with new artists like acker bilk, Kenny Ball, and Monty Sunshine\\u2026suddenly, New Orleans Dixieland was in vogue\\u2026things lasted until about 1965 before it all died away\\u2026\\n\\nIn 1973, 50s rock\\u2019n\\u2019roll made a comeback... \\u201cAmerican Graffiti,\\u201d \\u201cHappy Days,\\u201d Elton John singing \\u201cCrocodile Rock\\u201d\\u2014stuff like that\\u2026\\n\\nAlternative rock has been around long enough so that it has seen its own internal revivals\\u2026sounds from alt-rock history that have been rediscovered and advanced by a new generation of fans\\u2026\\n\\nEven the punk rock of the middle 70s was a revival of sorts\\u2026at its heart, that punk was a back-to-basics form of rock\\u2019n\\u2019roll but done with speed and a sneer\\u2026and that\\u2019s where we\\u2019ll start\\u2026this is alt-rock revivals, part one: punk\\u2026\\nLearn more about your ad choices.
