Bragston on the Marsh in the heart of the Norfolk Fens, is the scene at the beginning of this tale. Holmes is looking for a vital clue which he hopes will help convict the last of the Moriarty Gang. Whilst there, they visit a gypsy fair and a chance meeting brings them into contact with Arthur Threadgold and his wife Olive who live at the Manor House. He tells Holmes that the gypsies have threatened that they will kidnap his nephew, heir to the Threadgold fortune. . .
