SHOW NOTES Everyone who loves the agricultural lifestyle and is looking for a way to farm, either on the side or full-time, understands the obstacles to entry and the struggles to succeed.  The differences in the ways that people are going about this, the sizes of farms and the levels of experience could not be more varied.  So, it is hard to really describe one type of farmer that really represents everyone who loves this life. In today's episode I am going to interview a farmer who I believe comes as close as you can get to the avatar of the American farmer.  I am going to be speaking with Caitlyn Henderson.  Caitlyn and her husband, Jake, are farming row crops and raising cattle in South Central Kansas. Caitlyn had never farmed until she married Jake, but she grew up in Anthony, Kansas which is an agriculturally based town, and she was in the FFA.  Jake's parents were divorced, and Jake lived with his mother, about an hour away from Anthony.  Jake's family farm was in Anthony, and his father lived there and was a full-time farmer. Jake grew up farming in Anthony but not living there.  When Jake was 18 years old his father suddenly and unexpectedly died, and Jake inherited the farm.  He also inherited $500,000 of debt that came with the farm. Jake is the 5th generation to farm this piece of ground and live in the farm house.  The pressure to keep the farm and not be the generation to lose it was and is immense.  Caitlyn describes a moment in which the bank told them they were in danger of being foreclosed on, and how divine intervention led to them taking over a custom harvest business and turning things around. Today the farm has changed a bit, and the future looks bright for these Heartland farmers.  Caitlyn has written a book called "Faith, Farming & Family" about their story.  This is the same title of her blog and Instagram page and will link to them below.
