The Empathy Gap - What it Means to be a Healer

Published: Sept. 29, 2020, 6 a.m.

Have you ever told someone something personal and vulnerable, and felt like they aren’t actually seeing or hearing you? It really doesn’t feel good. And yet, many times, that is the kind of affect our patients are met with.

Maintaining professionalism is important, and being able to navigate chaotic, high-stakes situations is absolutely vital, but I think in the midst of that, we can also show our patients that we care. And in doing so, we can improve the provider-patient relationship, as well as make a traumatic situation a bit less painful for our patients.

In today’s episode, I want to talk with you a bit about the empathy gap -- about why, at times, it is okay to forego a bit of the calm under pressure to demonstrate to our patients that we care about them, that we understand what they’re experiencing is tough, and that we aren't robots.
