The turmoil at Belgiums data-protection watchdog and what it means for the EU

The recent firing of two directors at Belgium\u2019s Data Protection Authority has highlighted the challenge faced by EU member states in establishing truly independent privacy watchdogs, as they are required to do by the bloc\u2019s General Data Protection Regulation. After years of political infighting, Belgium now faces the challenge of rebuilding a regulator that can rise above the country\u2019s often heated political fray and operate at arm\u2019s length from government.
