In our ongoing October series on horror films, Carter is joined by filmmaker Maren Moreno to discuss the incredible book MEN, WOMEN, AND CHAINSAWS: GENDER IN THE MODERN HORROR FILM. Originally published in 1992, this riveting book combines feminist theory, psychoanalysis, and cross-cultural literary analysis and applies it to slasher movies. The book made an indelible impact on horror, forever changing how the genre understood itself, pointing out tropes and commonalities in the way gender and sexuality are understood and processed in supposedly low-brow movies. Maren and Carter discuss the book and two recent horror films, DON'T BREATHE and RAW and how they seem to be subverting so many of the tropes identified nearly 30 years ago.
