Anthology: Nathanael (foreword by Udo Ibeleme)

Published: June 10, 2019, 7 a.m.

Welcome to the Anthology series. In this series, we seek to highlight artistes who have released a large bevy of music over a considerable period of time that has blessed the nations far and wide. We firmly believe in giving honour to whom honour is due. It takes a lot to put out music that is of good quality on a consistent basis, so we definitely don’t take that process lightly. First on our list is singer, songwriter, musician and producer, Nathanael (@nathanael_fisherman).

“These days I try to leave the office at more reasonable hours, so I could get to work on time,” he says jokingly when asked about balancing music and work.

Whether rushing home from school or work, the shy, soft-spoken Trinidadian-born songwriter/musician admits that he has always had this immense passion for music.

He credits his family’s move to Jamaica, at the age of 6, as being the starting point of his journey. His mom, coming from a musical family, upon observing his interest, enrolled her son into classical piano classes. Growing up as a minister’s kid, he says he naturally found himself involved with church bands and youth choirs in his early childhood.

This childhood love would see him, in years to come, accompany the likes of Sherwin Gardner & Positive as a lead keyboardist in both their bands in his initial career

2012 was the year he stepped out from behind the keyboards and made his way towards the microphone, releasing his first single “Keep I”. The song was the introduction to what can only be described now as his signature sound – a unique blend of popular urban R&B and Caribbean music.

To date, he has released a number of well received compositions - or ‘offerings’ as he likes to call them – namely “Courage”, “Dance Like My Daddy”, 2014’s “Caution Tape Vol.1” hip hop mixtape and the more recent favourites “For Better Or Worse” off of the ‘For Better Or Worse’ album and “Testimony” off of ‘Chances’ album - both of which were released in March 2018.

The “Chances” album, one of the two debut double releases, charted at #1 on iTunes for Trinidad and Tobago within its first week digitally. Both projects would go on to do fairly well in the regional market.

A poet and a writer, he is also an accomplished producer - founder of Fisherman Project (@fishermanproject), a song-writing/production company led by himself and younger brother, Daniel Hamilton.

Expect more to come from the talented islander as he aims to reach his generation with the message of Christ through his art!

Let us now press play and enjoy the musical stylings of this amazing artiste. Many thanks to Udo Ibeleme (@udoibeleme) for providing the foreword for this episode.
