Anthology: Farenite

Published: March 23, 2020, 3:34 a.m.

Welcome to the Anthology series. In this series, we seek to highlight artistes who have released a large bevy of music over a considerable period of time that has blessed the nations far and wide. We firmly believe in giving honour to whom honour is due. It takes a lot to put out music that is of good quality on a consistent basis, so we definitely don’t take that process lightly. Next on our list is incandescent lyricist and freestyler, Farenite (@farenitefire).

Samuel Selkridge aka 'Farenite' was born in the beautiful twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago to parents Hussain Benjamin and Beverlyn Selkridge in the borough of Chaguanas. Described as a quiet child, he always had a thing for rhyming as he would often rhyme simple words like cat, mat, fat and rat, seeking to impress his mother. Growing up in a Christian home, it is while attending St. George’s College during his secondary school years he began writing poetry which developed into ‘freestyling’ while classmates would make beats on tables.

Negatively influenced and distracted by the world, Farenite found his way back to the Lord in 2009. Determined to make a difference via his music and being encouraged by family and friends he began composing songs. In 2010 he released his first professional recording which was a gospel reggae entitled ‘Never Giving Up’ on the Best Friend Riddim. This riddim also featured Joel ‘Positive’ Murray. He became better known for his dancehall track ‘When I Wake’ which was released in 2011. This aggressive yet melodious track engaged the attention of radio broadcasters, producers and other artistes in the gospel fraternity.

Farenite has been performing for the past nine years and since his first release he has recorded over 50 songs. Ordained as a pastor in 2013, the leader of The Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministry at Heaven Touching Earth International Ministries, he incorporates these giftings as part of his ministry when required. Used mightily of The Lord in Trinidad and Tobago, he has ministered in New York, St, Croix, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica and recently in Panama alongside his wife Apostle Gillian Selkridge.

He is known for his versatility and is unafraid of using various genres to get his message across. Impossible to box him in, he has done soca, reggae, EDM, hip hop and dancehall tracks. He has also performed alongside Positive, J Prince, Jaron Nurse, Jadee, Sean Daniel, Nathanael, Marc Isaacs, Samuel Medas, Isaac and Nehilet Blackman, Koen Duncan (now Kyiros), Shiselon, Mr. Lynx, Rizon, Blessed Messenger and Sherwin Gardner just to name a few. Getting into music production, he has produced his own music inclusive of one of his more popular songs, ‘Boldface Wit It’ and the Gospel Music Awards of Trinidad and Tobago 2019 video of the year, ‘The Transit Riddim’.

He believes in the transforming power of music and has chosen to boldly proclaim his faith through this medium to positively affect people’s lives. Respected for his writing, in particular his lyricism and biblical content, he challenges himself to find more creative ways to present the gospel through his music. He released his debut album on Friday 8th November 2019, which, in its first week, reached No. 26 on the top 100 albums iTunes chart for Trinidad and Tobago. He was also the top nominee at The Gospel Music Awards of Trinidad and Tobago with 5 nominations including Album of The Year and Songwriter of The Year.
