At this point, in the sparsely instrumentated fourth movement, we hear an alto solo singing a setting of Friedrich Nietzsche\\u2019s \\u201cMidnight Song\\u201d from Also sprach Zarathustra \\u201cO Mensch! Gib acht!\\u201d (\\u201cO man! Take heed!\\u201d), with thematic material from the first movement woven into it.
