At this point, in the sparsely instrumentated fourth movement, we hear an alto solo singing a setting of Friedrich Nietzsche\u2019s \u201cMidnight Song\u201d from Also sprach Zarathustra \u201cO Mensch! Gib acht!\u201d (\u201cO man! Take heed!\u201d), with thematic material from the first movement woven into it.
