Virtually every one of us knows someone who has been a victim of domestic violence – yet it is a crime that remains under-reported, under-prosecuted and often difficult to prove, pitting one person’s word against another. Which is what makes today’s Carte Blanche feature so utterly infuriating – because it’s a story of domestic violence where charges WERE laid, a case WAS brought to court and very clear proof existed – yet the perpetrator walked away with a slap on the wrist.

The public however, has seen the evidence the court wasn’t shown, and it’s made a household name of one Jaco Swart as the poster-child for toxic male violence. Why is someone like that still a free man, living right here in Cape Town? Let’s talk to Carte Blanche producer Anina Peens who produced last night’s horrifying segment on the case…
