He experienced rejection and depression when his first church failed in his home town. His wife was diagnosed with a potentially fatal acute chronic pancreatitis, while raising three small children. His daughter fought through the emotional trauma of an abusive relationship and a broken engagement which led to a downward spiral of destructive behavior.
