Academically Contingent: A Gig Economy for Professors

Published: Feb. 16, 2019, 6 p.m.

Since the 1970's universities large and small have relied more and more on "contingent faculty". Contingent professors are not on a track to tenure and have much less stable job careers. Rather than getting robust benefits, offices full of research assistants, and the prestige of lifetime employment they face low pay, low benefits, and insecurity. Dr. Mary-Beth Brophy, a member of the Executive Committee on Contingent and Part Time Faculty Forum, joins me to talk about this model of employment and what educators are doing to organize to change this model.\n\nTo read MLA's "Worst Practices: How to Avoid Exploiting Contingent Faculty": https://profession.mla.org/worst-practices-how-to-avoid-exploiting-contingent-faculty/
