Ulughbegsaurus - Uzbekistan's Apex Killer

Published: Sept. 18, 2021, 12:41 a.m.

The discovery of a new carcharodontosaurian is shaking Paleontology all over. Ulughbegsaurus was the main predator in Uzbekistan around 90 MAA, reaching 8 meters in length and weighing over a ton, which makes it bigger than Timurlengia, the local tyrannosauroid. Apparently, though, the latter group was responsible for the extinction of larger animals, such as Ulughbegsaurus, as they may have fed on the same prey and compete against each other. Ultimately, the small fry emerged victorious and our big boy Ulughbeg had gone the way of the dodo. Listen today to understand how this phenomenon works and how modern wildlife can help explain it better.
