Kirk MacNeil was raised in Sydney Nova Scotia which is on Cape Breton Island. The last name MacNeil is a name he is proud of as his Dad (Neil Vincent) fostered a love of Scottish and Irish Music from an early age. His mother’s father (Leo Caufield) was from Bonavista Newfoundland and was an amazing Celtic Irish Accordion player who was very proud of his Irish roots and never stopped playing the Irish Button Box and it’s a sound Kirk fell in love with. As a youngster, his folks and grandparents were proud to play Harry Hibbs Newfoundland Accordion Music all the time or listening to nonstop Jiggs, Reels, and traditional music from our local Cape Breton artists or Irish bands like the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem or Phil Coulter, all this had a strong impact on Kirk’s influences of music. A family outing in the family car says Kirk “always had his father changing the channel to the stations that played Celtic Music” and this totally inspired Kirk to love this type of music.
