b'Clifton House is an impressive Georgian building, set in tranquil landscaped gardens in the heart of Belfast. Opened in 1774 by Belfast Charitable Society, the building was the original Poor House in Belfast. For over a century it was used as a nursing home and hospital for older people. Today, Clifton House is Belfast\\u2019s most historic meeting venue, offering an inspiring space for a wide range of events including seminars, conferences, strategic planning sessions and private fine dining. It is also home to a heritage centre alongside a residential home and sheltered accommodation apartments. The Heritage Centre helps to tell not only the story of Clifton House, but also the history of Belfast Charitable Society, who founded the Poor House in 1774. The building currently houses a vast archive dating back to 1600s telling the story of the development of Belfast and a large collection of antiques and artefacts, some dating back to 1774 when the Poor House was first opened.'
