Morning Mantra: “Your emotional reaction doesn’t change the situation; it just changes how you feel about it.”
Yesterday I went to bring my horse in from his pasture and he was so lame he could barely walk. My heart sank.
After coaxing him into his stall, checking for swelling, heat, cuts, or any obvious signs of injury, I tucked him in and went home to call the vet and go to work.
I got so worked up on the way home that when I arrived, I was crying and in a state of despair. My beautiful husband comforted me, but I was inconsolable. I had worked myself up to the point that I was convinced that my horse, which I had only owned for 4 months and have waited for 10 years to own, was done.
In the shower, I got back to myself. I recognized that ruining my day and my mood wasn’t going to change anything about my horse’s condition. It would cloud my judgement, make me unpleasant to be around, and not help a damn thing.
I decided to take a wait and see approach. Give him some horse “aspirin”, hose his leg, call the vet, call the farrier, and stay POSITIVE.
Could this be a career ending injury? Yes. Could it mean mountains of vet bills? Yes. But until I KNOW this to be true, I will not go down that dark tunnel of worry and anxiety. Because it could also be an abscess in his hoof- which is very common in horses and easily treated.
So, in this long-winded story (me talk a lot? Lol) I’m trying to say- YOU are in control of one thing that determines your outlook- your thoughts. Your thoughts determine your emotions, your emotions determine your behavior.
