S1E47: On this episode, Increasing and Improving Access to Mammography Screening with Don Levanty, JD and Jessica Turgon and host Dr. Nick. October is breast cancer awareness month and Dr. Nick talks to his guests on some history of mammography and screening for breast cancer. A 1966 milestone study that showed early detection significantly reduced breast cancer mortality rate. And since 2007, breast cancer death rates have been steady in women younger than 50, but have continued to decrease in older women thought to be because of finding breast cancer earlier through screening, increased awareness as well as better treatments. The good news is we have made progress, the bad news is there is so much more we can and should be doing to extend access and importantly break down racial and economic barriers to screening for this major killer in women. Your better pill to swallow is to work towards providing widespread access to everyone in your community to this lifesaving technology and screening. Rethink the provision of mammography services extending access and fulfilling the hope expressed by Don that creates ease of access similar to our provision of other basic testing services and seek new ways to extend access making the service economic for all parties involved in the delivery.
