The Spiritual Message of 'The Matrix'
The word matrix appears five times in the King James Version, always in the phrase \u201call that openeth the matrix\u201d.
\nMatrix is a translation of the Hebrew word \u05e8\u05b6\u05d7\u05b6\u05dd (rechem), meaning womb. And openeth is \u05e4\u05b6\u05bc\u05d8\u05b6\u05e8 (peter), meaning that which first opens. So the phrase means that which first opens the womb. In other words, the mother\u2019s firstborn.
\nThe English word matrix comes from the same word in Latin, meaning womb, which in turn comes from mater meaning mother. At the time of translation, matrix meant womb in English, but it has since taken on different meanings in biology, mathematics, computing and electronics. (It is because of these multiple meanings as well as its use in the Bible that the Wachowskis chose it for their 1999 movie The Matrix \u2012 the Matrix is both a computer simulation for the humans\u2019 minds and a machine womb for their bodies.)
\nWhy the translators used the Latin-derived word in these particular instances, I don\u2019t know. They also translated the same phrase as \u201call that openeth the womb\u201d in Exodus, Ezekiel and Luke.
\nIn the earlier Tyndale translation (1534), the word matrix appears only once, but he translated the New Testament only:
