GulfCast Ep. 13 - A Treadmill for Mahi-Mahi

Published: Feb. 1, 2017, 5:05 p.m.

Today, we will spend some time with Dr. Martin Grosell, Professor of Marine Biology at the University of Miami. He is studying how the Deepwater Horizon oil spill affected one of the most important recreational and commercial fisheries in the Gulf. Dr. Grosell and his research team capture Mahi-Mahi in the Gulfstream to use in their experiments. They put the fish inside a swim tunnel, which is basically a treadmill for fish, where they monitor metabolic rates and swim performance in fish exposed to oil. What they discovered was totally unexpected. NOTE: Science is continually evolving.
