Episode 32

Join Johnny, Frances, and Dennis in this episode of Graphic Novel Explorers Club as they discuss the horror anthology Through the Woods by writer and artist Emily Carroll. The five stories in the book are “Our Neighbor’s House,” “A Lady’s Hands Are Cold,” “My Friend Janna,” “His Face All Red,” and “The Nesting Place”.

In this episode the gang discusses what the possible themes and meanings of the five stories of Through the Woods could be; the possible connections of the number “3” and the woods; if the quality of paper chosen to print a comic book effects the reader’s opinion of the storytelling and art; how the second story, “A Lady’s Hands Are Cold”, brought back memories of Bluebeard starring Richard Burton; which story reminded us “The Babadook“, V.C. Andrews, and the poem “Bluebird” by Charles Bukowski; and the storytelling and the art of Through the Woods.

Correction: Johnny mentions that the animated opening for Masterpiece Theater was created by Richard Scarry, when it fact it was created by Edward Gorey and for Mystery!, not Masterpiece Theater.
