Just over a month into 2022, Vladimir Putin announced a \u201cspecial military operation\u201d in Ukraine, and set the tone for what looked like an ominous year for global democracy.\n\nHigh-stakes elections in Hungary, Brazil, the U.S., Israel, and the Philippines put core issues of democracy on the ballot, and it was anyone\u2019s guess how things would turn out. \n\nIn some cases, authoritarianism made gains.
